In the
Pacific Northwest and Alaska, salmon are keystone species, supporting
wildlife from birds to bears and otters. The bodies of salmon
represent a transfer of nutrients from the ocean, rich in nitrogen,
sulfur, carbon and phosphorus, to the forest ecosystem.
