We all have kitchens and love to eat. Not everyone knows how to store onions and potatoes. No one wants to buy food and have it turn to moldy mess.
We aren't experts, so we did research, turn to Julia Collins Davidson from America's Test Kitchen, to learn from her experience.
Onions: where to store: Countertop. Keep onions in a ventilated space. You don't want your potatoes and onions close together, as gases in onions can hasten sprouting in potatoes.
Now that we talked about onions, lets talk about potatoes.
Where should potatoes be stored? Pantry or cupboard?
Potatoes should be kept inside a paper bag, cool, dark, dry space, and keep away from onions. Gas from onions can and will cause sprouting in potatoes. Sprouting potatoes are safe to eat, however, you should remove sprouts from potatoes, using the tip of potato peeler, or another kitchen tool. The potato sprouts are consider toxic due to their potentially high concentration of glycoalkaloids, which can have effort on the nervous system.
Another favorite, garlic.
How to store garlic: Store in a basket for air circulation on countertop. Don't remove papery outer until you use, this protects the garlic. Sometime you may come across garlic with the green shoots in center, no need to worry. Just remove them while cutting up garlic, they don't taste good.
